DOCTOR AMANDA'S STORY

MEET DOCTOR AMANDA

Dr. AMANDA's Migraine Story

I was 19 years old when I suffered from my ninth concussion. I was good. I was great! I was a sought-after rugby player, and no matter how good you are, when someone takes a cheap shot to your head…with his or her knee, it's over.

I tell you my story from my parents' and my teammates' perspectives because, unfortunately, I wasn't present to remember the moments. I was 19 years old, took a cheap shot to the head, and began seizing on the field.

My mom rushed out to hold me. She watched her oldest daughter's eyes roll into the back of her head. They threw me on a stretcher. As a parent now, I can't imagine what my parents would have been feeling and thinking as they chased down an ambulance to the nearest hospital. Unfortunately, while in that ambulance, I was pronounced dead. My heart stopped. My lungs stopped.
Thankfully, the EMTs on board were outstanding, and they were able to revive me.

Unfortunately, after that, I had a very long, hard road ahead of me for recovery. I went from being a straight A student, a leader on and off the field, independent, a make-it-happen type person, full of joy and life. It was amazing. I was on top of the world. And that hit took everything away from me.

I had such severe migraines that the tunnel vision would darken, and I would almost black out randomly. I had uncontrollable vomiting all over campus. I was failing tests left and right. I didn't feel like a leader. I felt like migraines had completely ruined my life. We traveled to the experts. We went to the specialists. We went to the NFL specialist to look into my brain injuries. Nobody could give us an answer on why a 19-year-old body was failing worse and worse and worse every day.

The Day My Life Changed

One day my mom was out bowling. She has a Tuesday bowling league, and a complete stranger, Marian, walked up to my mom and said, "How's Mandy doing?" See, in a small town, a lot of people knew what was going on and how bad I was suffering. And my mom had told her no one had given us any more answers and we didn't know.

And Marian, when no other medical professional could help us, said, "You need to see my doctor."

That is when chiropractic single-handedly changed my life.
